Tip of the day 17/2/2023 – Carnival in Athens

From Thursday 16 February and for 12 days, the Municipality of Athens invites young and old to a colourful carnival party in the centre and neighbourhoods of Athens. A total of 67 events with free participation await young and old alike to celebrate Halloween in 55 different locations in every corner of the city.

The rich program of carnival events, which will be completed on February 27 with the big celebration of Clean Monday on Filopappou Hill, was curated by the cultural institutions of the Municipality of Athens, the Organization of Culture, Sports & Youth (OPANDA) and Technopolis, with the cooperation of the city’s radio station Athens 9.84 and This is Athens.

Apart from the concerts and outdoor events in neighborhoods of Athens, there are also many kids activities in National Gallery, in Athens Library in Larissis Station, in  Municipal market at  Kypseli, and in other venues too.

Children’s carnival
Carnival rhythms by the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Municipality of Athens, dancing, music, stilt walkers, animators and face painting.

11:30 → AGIOU ΜΕΛΕIOU SQUARE
Carnival rhythms by the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Municipality of Athens

12:00 → VARNAVA SQUARE – HERATOSTHENOUS – HERO OF ATTICUS & VASS. CONSTANTINE (STATUE OF THE WOODCUTTER)
Revival of the carnivals of Macedonia by the Recreational – Cultural Association “Orpheus” accompanied by the music ensemble “Bronza Banda” with traditional dances and carnival runic customs.

12:00 → METRO STATION ACROPOLIS – PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY OF DIONISIOS AREOPAYTOU – JACQUELINE DE ROMIGNY SQUARE
Carnival route with the percussion group “Batalá Atenas” with Brazilian rhythms.

Carnival customary events by the Cultural Traditional Dance Group “Orpheus”.

12:00 → TANK SQUARE (COLONAKI) – ΒΟΥΚΟΥΡΕΣΤΙOU – CONSTITUTION SQUARE – ERMOU – MONASTIRAKI – AGION ANARGYROI SQUARE
The dance group of Maria Mavromoustakaki’s Carnival dance group weaves the carnival lantern, accompanied by carnival songs and musical instruments, reviving the traditional customs of Halloween in the historic centre of Athens.

12:00 → FRYNIS & EUTYCHIDOU – YMITTOU – ARISTARCHOU – MESOLOGIOU SQUARE
Carnival music and dance promenade with the participation of the choir, the dance group and the mandolin band of the Lefkadian Association of Ilioupolis and surrounding municipalities “Faneromeni”.

12:00 → AGIOU ΜΕΛΕTIOU & DROSOPOULOS – FOKIONOS NEGRI – KYPSELI SQUARE
Traditional mock carnival dances and re-enactment of the Thracian event of “Bey” by the BAKHAI Cultural Society of Instrumental Art, accompanied by a traditional orchestra.

13:00 → DIONISIOS AREOPAYTOU
Concert with the Big Band of the Municipality of Athens

19:00 → METRO STATION ACROPOLIS – SHELLEY – VYRONOS – PHILANTHROPIC SOCIETY SQUARE -KYDATHINAEON-ADRIANOPLEOS-TRIPODS – FLESSA-LYSIA -ADRIANOS – MONASTERY SQUARE
Parade of carnivalists with the “Forms of Expression”, who will stir up the people with dulcimer, guitars, clarinet and bagpipes for a Carnival like in the old days.

18:00 – 23:00 → MUNICIPAL MARKET OF KYPSELI
Sometimes We Disco
The record stores open and the best music moments of the legendary clubs of the early 70s fill the Kypseli Municipal Market from the city’s top collectors and DJs. A unique tribute to the original Disco era in collaboration with This is Athens.
