World Wetlands Day is recognised as a United Nations International Day of Importance, celebrated around the world each year on 2 February. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) in Ramsar, Iran, on 2 February 1971.

If you are in Athens this day, and you want to visit the closest wetland you should visit Vouliagmeni lake, one of the most beautiful spots of Athens Riviera. In any case, save this post, and don’t forget to visit this lake during your trip for just a walk, a thermal bath, a diner at the restaurant or just a coffee. Sometimes, during the summer period, you could  even have some yoga classes around the lake.

Lake Vouliagmeni, in the heart of the Athenian Riviera, is the hidden treasure of Attica’s nature. In an idyllic landscape, a rare geological phenomenon of world importance invites you to get to know it. The brackish waters of the lake, which are constantly renewed, both from the sea and from the underground thermal springs, promise a natural and unique thermal spa experience.

The imposing rock, the thermal waters, the winding underwater tunnels, the lush green vegetation create a unique geological phenomenon. Its current form was formed after the roof of the cave fell down, which was eroded by the high temperature of the water flowing inside. The lake is included in the National NATURA 2000 list and as a Site of Special Natural Beauty by the Ministry of Culture.

The aquatic paradise of Lake Vouliagmeni in its green waters is home to a multitude of unique organisms. Among them stands out a species of sea anemone, Paranemonia Vouliagmeniensis, as well as species of sponges and molluscs that testify to the absolute balance of the lake’s ecosystem. The living world also includes the well-known Doctor Fish, which offer a skin exfoliating treatment.
