Athens’ tram system offers an easy and affordable way to explore the city, from central Athens to the stunning Athenian Riviera. With 63 stops along two main lines, it connects key spots like Syntagma Square, the beaches of Flisvos and Voula, and the busy Piraeus port area. Whether you’re sightseeing in the city or relaxing by the coast, here’s everything you need to know about navigating Athens by tram
Main Tram Lines
The Athens tram has two main lines:
- T7 Line (Agia Triada – Asklipio Voulas): This route goes from Piraeus down to Voula, with stops at beach areas and popular seaside districts.
- T6 Line (Syntagma – Pikrodafni): Starting at Syntagma Square, this route travels south, intersecting the T7 line at Pikrodafni, where you can transfer to reach either the city center or coastal destinations.
Beaches and Coastal Stops
If you’re planning a beach day, the tram provides direct access to some popular spots:
- Flisvos: A marina area lined with cafes and waterfront promenades.
- Glyfada: Known for its sandy beach, shops, and lively nightlife scene.
- Voula Beach: A quieter spot, popular for swimming and its clean facilities.
- Delta Falirou: It’s one of the venues where during summer take place the biggest music festivals of Athens such as Release and Eject Festival.
Schedule and Frequency
The Athens tram operates from early morning until midnight on weekdays, with extended service until around 2:30 AM on weekends. During peak hours, trams arrive every 7 to 10 minutes, ensuring a smooth travel experience across the city’s key stops.
Accessibility and Ticketing
Each station is equipped with ramps and low platforms, making the tram accessible to wheelchair users and those with strollers. Ticket machines are available at every station, with fares starting at €1.20 for a 90-minute ticket, which covers multiple forms of public transit. Multi-day and 24-hour passes are also available; make sure to validate your ticket before boarding.
Tips for a Smooth Ride
- Prepare for the Beach: If heading to the coast, pack essentials like sunscreen, water, and a towel.
- Avoid Peak Times: Traveling outside rush hours (8–10 AM and 5–7 PM) makes for a more comfortable ride.
- Use Navigation Apps: Apps like OASA provide real-time updates, helping you plan connections and avoid delays.
Why Take the Tram?
The Athens tram makes it easy to explore the city’s urban and coastal areas without worrying about parking or complex transfers. Whether you’re touring Athens’ historical sites or spending a day on the beach, the tram offers a smooth way to experience the city’s best spots.
Important Note:
From 4 March until mid-June, line 6 of the tram line Picrodaphne – Syntagma will be terminated at the Fix stop, with the Fix-Syntagma section remaining closed in order to carry out the next phase of the works for the redevelopment of Vasilissis Olgas Avenue.
According to OASA, the tram traffic closure will last from Tuesday 4 March to 15 June 2025, during which time the Syntagma, Zappeio and Vouliagmenis Avenue stops will not be served.
