Island Hopping in Greece: A Ferry Tale (with a Side of Practical Advice)

Greek ferries might not sound like the most exciting topic—but when it comes to planning an unforgettable island-hopping trip, they’re absolutely essential. Think of it like choosing the right pair of shoes for a hike: you want something reliable, comfortable, and suited to your journey.

I’ve spent hours diving into ferry schedules, comparing routes, reading reviews, and crunching the details. Trust me—there’s a lot more to Greek ferry travel than meets the eye. From high-speed options to scenic slow rides, choosing the right ferry can make or break your experience. So let’s dive in and explore the best ways to navigate the Greek islands by sea.

Traditional Ferries: The Slow and Steady (and Often Scenic) Option

Traditional ferries, or “conventional ferries” as they’re sometimes called, are like the grand old dames of the Aegean Sea. They might not be the fastest, but they offer a certain charm and a more relaxed pace of travel. Think of them as floating hotels, with restaurants, cafes, shops, and even swimming pools on some of the larger ones.

Why Choose a Traditional Ferry?

  • It’s the journey, not just the destination: If you’re the kind of traveler who enjoys savoring the experience, a traditional ferry is the way to go. Find a comfy spot on deck, feel the sea breeze in your hair, and watch the islands drift by. It’s the perfect opportunity to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the simple pleasures of life.
  • Space to stretch out: Traditional ferries are generally more spacious than their high-speed counterparts. You’ll have plenty of room to roam around, find a quiet corner to relax, or mingle with fellow travelers.
  • Outdoor access: One of the best things about traditional ferries is the access to outdoor deck space. Soak up the sun, breathe in the fresh sea air, and enjoy the panoramic views of the Greek islands and coastline. It’s an experience that’s hard to beat.
  • Seasickness-friendly: If you’re prone to motion sickness, traditional ferries are usually a better option. Their larger size and slower speed make for a more stable ride.

Popular Traditional Ferry Companies:

  • Blue Star Ferries
  • Hellenic Seaways
  • Minoan Lines

High-Speed Ferries: For When You’re Short on Time

High-speed ferries, also known as catamarans or hydrofoils, are the speed demons of the Aegean. They’ll get you to your destination in a fraction of the time compared to traditional ferries. But there are a few trade-offs to consider.

Why Choose a High-Speed Ferry?

  • Maximize your time: If you’re on a tight schedule and want to see as much as possible, high-speed ferries are the way to go. They can save hours off your travel time, giving you more time to explore the islands.
  • Modern amenities: High-speed ferries often have modern amenities like air-conditioned lounges, comfortable seating, and onboard Wi-Fi.

Things to Consider:

  • Limited outdoor access: High-speed ferries usually have limited or no outdoor deck space. So if you love feeling the wind in your hair and watching the waves, you might be disappointed.
  • Bumpy ride: Because they’re smaller and faster, high-speed ferries can be more sensitive to waves. If you’re prone to seasickness, this is something to keep in mind.
  • Higher cost: High-speed ferries generally cost more than traditional ferries.

Popular High-Speed Ferry Companies:

  • SeaJets
  • Golden Star Ferries
  • Hellenic Seaways (some routes)

Ferry Ports of Attica: Where Your Adventure Begins

When planning your ferry trip, you’ll need to know which port to depart from. Attica, the region surrounding Athens, has three main ferry ports:

  • Piraeus: Piraeus is the largest and busiest port in Greece, serving as the central hub for ferry travel to most of the Greek islands. Located about 10 km southwest of central Athens, it can get crowded and hectic—especially during peak season—but that’s all part of the island-hopping adventure.
  • Rafina: Rafina is a bit smaller and more manageable than Piraeus, located about 30 km east of Athens. It’s a popular departure point for ferries to the Cyclades islands.
  • Lavrio: This is the smallest of the three ports, located at the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula. It mainly serves the Cyclades islands and some islands in the north Aegean.

Choosing the Right Port:

The best port for your journey will depend on your destination and the ferry company you choose. Many ferry companies operate from multiple ports, so it’s worth comparing schedules and prices before making your decision.

Distance to the island you plan to visit also has an effect on price. For example, you will find that ferries from Rafina to the popular Cyclades Islands of Mykonos and Paros are cheaper.

Getting to the Ports:

All three ports are easily accessible from Athens by public transportation. You can take the metro, bus, KTEL or taxi to reach your desired port. Visit our transport hubs page to find your way easily.

Booking Your Ferry Tickets: Don’t Leave it to Chance!

You can book ferry tickets online, through travel agents, or directly at the port. But honestly, I wouldn’t recommend waiting until the last minute, especially if you’re traveling during peak season. Ferries can fill up quickly, and you don’t want to be stuck on the mainland when you could be island hopping!

Tip: If you’re planning on island hopping, consider purchasing an island-hopping pass. It can save you some money and give you more flexibility with your travel plans.

Boarding and Departure: All Aboard!

  • Arrival Time: Aim to arrive at the port at least an hour before your scheduled departure time, especially during peak season. This gives you plenty of time to check in, drop off your luggage, and maybe grab a coffee and pastry while you soak up the pre-departure buzz.
  • Boarding Procedures: Listen to the port staff and have your ticket and ID ready. You might have to go through a security check, so be prepared for that.
  • Finding Your Way: Once you’re on board, take a few minutes to orient yourself. Find your cabin or seating area, locate the restrooms, and check out the dining options. Some ferries even have shops and entertainment areas!

Enjoying the Journey: Relax, Explore, and Soak it All In

Whether you choose a traditional ferry or a high-speed option, ferry travel in Greece is an experience in itself. Here are a few tips to make the most of your journey:

  • Embrace the Views: Ferry travel offers stunning views of the Greek islands and coastline. Find a comfortable spot on deck (if available) and soak up the scenery. It’s the perfect opportunity to snap some amazing photos and create memories that will last a lifetime.
  • Relax and Unwind: Take advantage of the ferry’s amenities, such as cafes, restaurants, and lounges. Read a book, listen to music, or simply relax and enjoy the journey. It’s a great time to de-stress and recharge.
  • Seasickness Survival: If you’re prone to seasickness, consider taking medication beforehand or bringing along remedies like ginger candies or acupressure wristbands. Choose a seat in the middle of the ferry, where the motion is less pronounced. And if all else fails, just close your eyes and imagine you’re already on that beautiful island beach!
  • Respect the Space: Be mindful of your fellow passengers and keep noise levels down, especially in seating and sleeping areas.
  • Travel with kids without stress:  Usually most of the ferries has nursing room, playroom and your  kids could even get a gift from the reception  when you are boarding.

Plan For Delays

Weather conditions, crowding, technical problems on ships and public transport strikes (includes ferries) can cause delays and even cancellations. A heavy storm with severe winds can prompt the authorities to prohibit ships from leaving ports. A rare situation during summer but it can happen.

Ferrying to Athens to board a flight? Ensure delays are factored in and aim to leave plenty of time for transit from the port to the Airport.

Even planning for a ferry that is going to arrive at 6am in Athens to catch a flight at 16:00pm is quite risky, as there are several things that can go wrong and you could end up missing your flight.

Wind conditions, any sudden storms (they can happen in summer too) or even strikes can force the authorities to ban ferries from leaving the dock for a lengthy period.

By understanding the different types of ferries and planning your journey accordingly, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable island-hopping experience in Greece. Happy sailing!
