You can book ferry tickets online, through travel agents, or directly at the port. But honestly, I wouldn’t recommend waiting until the last minute, especially if you’re traveling during peak season. Ferries can fill up quickly, and you don’t want to be stuck on the mainland when you could be island hopping!

Tip: If you’re planning on island hopping, consider purchasing an island-hopping pass. It can save you some money and give you more flexibility with your travel plans.

Boarding and Departure: All Aboard!

• Arrival Time: Aim to arrive at the port at least an hour before your scheduled departure time, especially during peak season. This gives you plenty of time to check in, drop off your luggage, and maybe grab a coffee and pastry while you soak up the pre-departure buzz.

• Travel with kids without stress:  Usually most of the ferries has nursing room, playroom and your  kids could even get a gift from the reception  when you are boarding.

Plan For Delays

Weather conditions, crowding, technical problems on ships and public transport strikes (includes ferries) can cause delays and even cancellations. A heavy storm with severe winds can prompt the authorities to prohibit ships from leaving ports. A rare situation during summer but it can happen.

Ferrying to Athens to board a flight? Ensure delays are factored in and aim to leave plenty of time for transit from the port to the Airport.

Even planning for a ferry that is going to arrive at 6am in Athens to catch a flight at 16:00pm is quite risky, as there are several things that can go wrong and you could end up missing your flight.

Wind conditions, any sudden storms (they can happen in summer too) or even strikes can force the authorities to ban ferries from leaving the dock for a lengthy period.
