Staying Powered Up in Greece
Greece, like most of Europe, uses a different electrical system than countries like the US or the UK. To ensure your mobile phone, laptop or other devices stay charged and ready for your travel adventures, here’s what you need to know:
Voltage and Frequency
- Voltage: 220-240 volts
- Frequency: 50 Hz
What this means: If your devices are designed for a different voltage (e.g., 110-120 volts), you’ll need a voltage converter to avoid damaging them. Most modern electronics (laptops, phones) have built-in converters, but check the label or specifications to be sure.
Plug Types in Greece
Greece primarily uses two types of plugs:
- Type C: This is the most common type, also known as the “Europlug.” It has two round pins.
- Type F: Also known as the “Schuko” plug, it has two round pins and two grounding clips on the sides.
Important Note: Type C plugs can usually fit into Type F outlets, but not the other way around.
Do You Need an Adapter?
- EU Devices: If your devices have Type C or Type F plugs (common in Europe), you won’t need an adapter.
- Other Plug Types: If your devices have different plug types (e.g., US, UK, Australian), you’ll need an adapter to plug them into Greek outlets.
Where to Buy Adapters
- Before You Travel: It’s best to purchase adapters before your trip, as they might be more expensive or harder to find in Greece.
- Airport: You can usually find adapters at airport shops, but they might be pricier.
- Electronics Stores: Look for electronics stores in Greece that sell travel adapters.
Additional Tips
- Dual Voltage Devices: Check if your devices are dual voltage (110-240V). If so, you only need a plug adapter, not a voltage converter.
- Power Banks: Carry a portable power bank to charge your devices on the go.
By understanding the electrical system in Greece and packing the necessary adapters, you can ensure your devices stay powered up throughout your trip.
