The March or “Martia” is an old custom in Balkans, and it is believed to have its origins in Ancient Greece and specifically in the Eleusinian Mysteries. According to the custom, on March 1, mothers wear a bracelet on the wrist of their children’s hand, made of twisted white and red thread, the March or Martia, to protect them from the first sun of spring, which is particularly harmful, according to popular beliefs. The March also protects, it is believed, against mosquitoes and fleas and even wards off disease and other evils. It is made on the last day of February and worn on the first day of March, before leaving the house. In some areas, the March is worn on the big toe like a ring to keep the wearer from tripping. This bracelet is taken off at the end of the month, or left on the rose bushes when the first swallow is seen, for the birds to take it and build their nest, or burned in the Easter sunrise light.

So, have you wore your March today? If not, it’s possible to find it in many handcrafted shops in a big variety to choose.
