Koukaki is located under Filopappou Hill, right next to the Acropolis area. This is an urban area that has grown in popularity from a students-only neighborhood to a vibrant Athens location, with a great selection of restaurants, bars, cafes, and shops. The area’s close proximity to the Acropolis and its less touristy character, as compared to the Acropolis and Plaka areas is highly desirable to many Athens travelers.

Most of what is happening in Koukaki takes place in its two now famous pedestrian streets, Drakou and Olympiou streets. Drakou is a “posh” area with more premium restaurants and shops, whereas Olympiou street is very vibrant with plenty of selection. Both streets are a green “oasis” in a very densely built area.

Transport Information

The Syggrou-Fix (subway) Station is the closest one to the area at the junction of Syggrou avenue and Drakou street. From there bus and trolley links connect you to Syntagma Square, the Port of Piraeus, and the Athenian coastline. Just a few meters away there is also a Tram stop.

In essence, you can also walk to the Acropolis (10-15 minutes), Plaka (15-20 minutes), and even to Syntagma Square.

Local Sights

Apart from the Acropolis and Plaka which are in very close proximity, Koukaki also has some significant places of interest worth visiting.

• National Museum of Contemporary Art – This emblematic Fix building at Syggrou Avenue is home to modern artworks with frequent exhibitions featuring Greek and international artists.
• Filopappou Hill – A park and wonderful walking destination also featuring great views of the Acropolis and the Parthenon. On sunny days this park is frequented by locals who visit it as a getaway from Koukaki’s densely populated apartment buildings area.

• Garyfallo Kanela – Odyssea Androutsou 31, Koukaki. Serving some unique dishes from the “Constantinoupolis” cuisine (Istanbul under Turkish rule) and operating until 18:00 daily. Highly recommended and best to visit before 14:30 when some of the day’s dishes have sold out.
• Riza Riza – Drakou 19, Koukaki. Serving brunch, lunch, and dinner daily, Riza Riza is a really good restaurant featuring meze dishes with its own twist and some classic greek dishes.
• Avli – G. Olympiou 4, Koukaki. The ideal place to enjoy small plates with tapas (mezedes as the Greeks say) with a big variety of drinks too.
• Kalyvas Restaurant – Dimitrakopoulou 91-93, Koukaki. The most popular greek street food restaurant in Koukaki, located at the vibrant Olympiou pedestrian street. Serving food all day with great salads and also some favorite greek barbecue dishes.

• Laluk Cafe Bar – Olympiou 15, Koukaki. Our team’s favorite pet-friendly cafe and bar with great quality drinks and some side dishes to accompany them. Really nice atmosphere if you are looking for a nice less crowded bar.
• Strange Brew Taproom & Bottleshop – Falirou 86, Koukaki. Great selection of hard-to-find beers and ales, one of the best in Athens.

Greeks do enjoy their coffee regularly. Don’t forget to try the iced espresso drinks such as Fredo Espresso or Fredo Cappucino.

• Vanilla Bistro – Veikou 40, Koukaki. A nice and cozy cafe serving high-quality coffee all day.
• Hippy Hippo – Zinni 37, Koukaki. Enjoy coffee and drinks and this popular Koukaki cafe.

Shopping

If you want to go shoppping in Koukaki, then you should walk across Dimitrakopoulou and Veikou streets. From handmade souvenir shops and ceramicists ateliers to anything you can imagine. Cloudkeys provides key local markets worth visiting.
