The Acropolis and Plaka areas are located on the footsteps of the Acropolis Hill. Plenty of souvenir shops, traditional and modern cuisine restaurants, bars and even travel facilities such as luggage storage and public laundries are available in the area.

Transport Information

The Acropolis Metro (subway) Station is right outside the Acropolis Museum. One block away, on the Syggrou Avenue there are bus and trolley links connecting you to Syntagma Square, the Port of Piraeus and the Athenian coastline.

If you are heading towards Syntagma Square or the Ermou Street shoping district, consider walking the distance as you will encounter several sights of interest, such as the ancient Roman Baths next to the pavement, right outside Zappeion.

Local Sights

The area is renowned for the ancient Acropolis site and the Parthenon. The new Acropolis Museum is a must visit as well.

• Acropolis Archaeological Site – Visit for seeing the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Propylaea and the Temple of Athena Nike.
• Temple of Olympian Zeus – Visit through Adrian’s Arch the impressive temple dedicated to Zeus.
• Anafiotika – A must-visit neighborhood on the Acropolis Hill. Built by people from Anafi island in the Aegean Sea.
• Panathenaic Stadium / Kalimarmaron – Home of the first modern Olympic Games and the finish line of the Marathon

• Acropolis Museum Restaurant – Dionysiou Areopagitou 15, Acropolis. The Acropolis Museum features a restaurant with great views of the Parthenon and is highly recommended. It is advisable to contact the Museum to book a table on +30 210 900 0900.
• Ellevoro Restaurant – Rovertou Gkali 2, Acropolis. A warm and cozy restaurant serving local greek dishes with a gourmet twist.
• Opos Palia – Veikou 2, Acropolis. Great restaurant for experiencing greek meze dishes, frequented by locals too.

Recommended Bars

Multiple places to enjoy a night out or even watch major sporting events.

• Brettos Bar – Kidathineon 41, Plaka. Cozy atmosphere and great spirits, including traditional alcoholic drinks of Greece such as ouzo, tsipouro and liquors, some distilled at Brettos Bar.
• Odin Athens – Navarchou Nikodimou 2, Plaka. Great selection of excellently executed cocktails. A wonderful bar at a very nice location in Athens.

Recommended Cafes

Greeks do enjoy their coffee regularly. Don’t forget to try the iced espresso drinks such as Fredo Espresso or Fredo Cappucino.

• Melina Mercouri Cafe – Lisiou 22, Plaka. A cafe full of history, dedicated to the legendary actress and politician Melina Mercouri.
• Yiasemi – Mnisikleous 23, Plaka. Enjoy coffee with traditional and modern cakes and desserts in this wonderful Plaka cafe.

Shopping

There are multiple small shops and supermarkets in the Acropolis area. From souvenir shops to anything you can imagine. Cloudkeys provides key local markets worth visiting.

• Dionysiou Areopagitou Street – Mostly souvenir shops and tourist bars and restaurants. Cloudkeys recommends visiting this market for fun stuff.
• Vyronos Street, Plaka – Nice to wander around this street in Plaka featuring multiple shops.

• Acropolis Museum Luggage Storage – If you have bought a ticket for the Acropolis Museum, you can leave your luggage for free. This is ideal if you are arriving early and your check-in is much later or if your checkout is early and you have a flight to catch.
