Tip of the day – August in Athens

The month of August, the last month of summer, is the month that, usually, most of the locals have their annual holidays, as a result the city will be probably quite empty and most of the shops will be closed. But, I guess if you don’t like crowded places and  cities, and you want to discover a city during your trip without many people around, this is the perfect month to visit Athens. Of course, all touristic places like Monastiraki, Plaka, Acropolis are always open so you won’t missed the most important sights and monuments of the city or some souvenirs shopping or having your breakfast at Anafiotika – and maybe you enjoy it even more.

Thins to do in Athens during August

• Watch a movie in an open-air cinema or attend one of the cinematic experiences in Athens
• Swim in an empty beach near Athens
• Discover the pools and the waterparks of Athens and have a swim with an Acropolis view
• Take the tram from Syntagma and enjoy Athens Riviera
• Have a picnic in a park of Athens – yes, they exist!
• Visit Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center: you will always find something  interesting to do and see there – kayaking in the canal maybe?
• Attend an outdoor concert of a local or international artist/band
• Go for an easy hike in Parnitha mountain or just take the cable to the top: It is sure that the temperature will be much cooler than the city center
• Enjoy cocktails and local beers in the terraces of the bars that remain opens and discuss with the locals anything you want
• Learn more about animals and wildlife (and maybe, even play with them) by visiting farms and museums
• If you are travelling with kids, check here some activities to make exciting memories with them

An important note that you should have in mind is that on August 15th is the biggest orthodox celebrations for Greeks, so it is a bank holiday, that means that on this day even transports won’t be really often, shops will be closed, and few people will be around the city. So, plan your trip wisely –  even on August you will really enjoy Athens with many things to do and to see!

The public transport on August 15th

August 15: How public transport will operate: Changes to public transport schedules on August 15 – How buses, metro, and trolleys will operate.

Metro Line 1 (ISAP)
From Monday 10 to Sunday 16 August, services will run every 12.5 minutes, including Saturday 15 August 2026. Services between 5:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. will always run every 15 minutes.

Metro Line 2
From Monday 10 to Sunday 16 August: Services every 9.5–11 minutes between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. and every 12.5 minutes before 7:00 a.m. and after 10:00 p.m. From Saturday, August 15 to Sunday, August 16: Trains run every 15 minutes. Trains after midnight every Friday and Saturday night run every 15 minutes.

Metro Line 3
From Monday 10 to Sunday 16 August,: Services every 8.5–10 minutes until 10:00 p.m., every 11.5 minutes after 10:00 p.m. From Saturday, August 15 to Sunday, August 16: Trains run every 10 minutes between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., and every 11.5 minutes during the rest of the day. Services after midnight every Friday and Saturday night run every 15 minutes. Services to and from the airport run daily every 36 minutes.

Buses and Trolleybuses
The summer schedule for buses and trolleybuses in Athens will continue until schools reopen. On Saturday, August 15, Sunday and holiday schedules will be in effect. Passengers can check the daily schedules on the OASA Telematics app or at telematics.oasa.gr.

Tram
From Monday 10 to Sunday 16 August,: Schedules every 15 minutes. Schedules after midnight every Friday and Saturday night are every 25 minutes.

Suburban
The regular schedule applies. Hellenic Train has not yet announced the suspension of specific routes for Saturday, August 15.
