Toys in the spotlight – From the Benaki Museum Collection II

The “Toys in the Spotlight” initiative highlights hidden treasures from the collection of the Benaki Museum of Toys.

Every three months, a new toy is unveiled.

For the May–July 2026 period, the Village of Asterix emerges from our stores!

The resourceful hero and his companions were created in 1959 by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo and are presented at the Benaki Toy Museum through a rare, limited-edition composition that fears neither Roman legions nor the dust of time.

The collectible series “Uderzo: Mini & Village Astérix” by the French company Pixi & Cie (France, 1990s) is one of 500 numbered sets, featuring hand-painted metal figurines. Through intricate detail and miniature scale, the transition from comic strip to three-dimensional object comes to life, transforming narrative into a collectible artifact. A symbolic play-object that blends humor, history, and cultural identity, turning Asterix’s imaginary world into a tangible viewing experience.

Don’t miss the chance to meet Asterix, Obelix, the druid Panoramix, and the community of the “indomitable Gauls,” ready for new adventures within their iconic village.

Opening hours: 30/04/2026 – 26/07/2026

MARIA LA CALLAS: The Art of Italian Costume Design in the Film

The exhibition Maria La Callas: The Art of Italian Costume Design in the Film pays tribute to Maria Callas through the visionary costumes created by Massimo Cantini Parrini for the film Maria, directed by Pablo Larraín. The exhibition is curated by the film’s costume designer, the internationally renowned and award-winning Italian costume designer Massimo Cantini Parrini, in collaboration with students in Fashion Art Direction at Polimoda, of which he is also an alumnus and mentor.

The exhibition is organized by the Embassy of Italy in Athens and Benaki Museum, under the patronage of Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, the exhibition portraits costumes as a main feature of cinema and theatre. It honours the genius of Italian costume design, a blending of craftsmanship, research and storytelling, showcasing the legacy of the immortal Diva.

Massimo Cantini Parrini’s approach explores the powerful and multifaceted personality of Maria Callas, focusing on snapshots of pivotal moments in her life and artistic career. Legendary opera costumes coexist with pieces redolent of the glamour of her social life. A vibrant tribute to the captivating identity of “La Divina,” one of the most refined and recognizable divas of the twentieth century, an icon of style and timeless elegance.

Through the “Made in Italy” pieces in the collection, the exhibition reflects on the sociological and cultural evolution of three critical decades in the 20th century (the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s), highlighting Italian ascendancy in the fashion industry.

The exhibition celebrates in Greece the “Italian Fashion Days in the World”.

The Outward Gaze. The Photographs of Joan Leigh Fermor

The exhibition is based on the book of the same name and is a reference to the entire photographic work of Joan Leigh Fermor, beloved of author Patrick Leigh Fermor.

It includes images from Greece, where she and her husband found refuge for decades, as well as depictions from their numerous travels throughout Europe and Asia. With her camera always with her, she recorded the peculiarities of the landscape and its inhabitants. Images that reflect the purity of her soul, her love for people, her admiration for the grandeur of nature and the history of places. Joan’s vision was neither influenced nor subjected to criticism and therefore remained unadulterated throughout.

This exhibition on the photographic work of Joan Leigh Fermor, housed in the National Library of Scotland, was curated by Xavier Francesco Salomon, an art historian and Director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon. Olivia Stewart designed the show in collaboration with Natalia Boura.

Opening hours: 09/05 – 26/07/2026
