Do you know that Athens wasn’t always the capital of Greece? On 1838, January 11th, Ioannis Kapodistrias transfer the capital of independent Greece to the small, but beautiful, island of Aegina. It is one of the Saronic Greek islands, only 27 km from the city of Athens, and a perfect daily excursion, even on winter days.

Walk among  the pedestrian roads and beautiful neoclassical and mansion houses and the picturesque harbour. If you have more time, visit smaller villages, discover the impressive ancient olive grove, the archaeological site of Vagia -ideal for the sunset time, the monastery of Agios Nektarios, the patron saint of the island. If you like hiking, it is very easy to climb to the top, Profitis Ilias, and see the island from above, as well as the smaller island of Moni, which in summer becomes one of the most touristic beaches of Attica. Of course, don’t forget to try and take with you the famous local product of the island: peanuts!
