If you are wandering between Ampelokipoi and Ilisia area, you may notice the Tower of Athens, the first skyscraper of the city. This is a building that is founded on June 13rd of 1968 and it is located at the junction of Vasilissis Sofias and Mesogeion Avenue. It is the tallest building in Greece with 103 metres high and 28 floors. It is mainly a building for offices and shops. The architects were Ioannis Vikelas and Ioannis Kympritis. Despite the criticism it has received due to its design and great height, the Tower of Athens is now considered one of the landmarks of Athens. The second skyscraper of the city is located in Piraeus. Piraeus Tower or Piraeus Trade and Navigation Centre is an 84-metre high building, which is the second tallest in Greece. Construction of the building began in 1972 to designs by Ioannis Vikelas, Demosthenes Molfesis and Alexandros Loizos. The skeleton of the building was completed in 1974 and in 1983 the exterior was clad with glass and metal plates. Only the three lower floors of the building were used and the rest was left empty. The reconstruction of the tower began in 2021 and is expected to be completed in 2023. It has 24 floors and two basements, with a total built-up area of 34,623 square metres (34,623 square feet).
