It’s the first time that the National Museum of Contemporary Art is fully operational and aims to be the leading institution of contemporary art and visual culture in the country. An extensive series of reforms, innovations and new exhibition practices are radically changing its character and its cultural, artistic and institutional identity.

The EMST collection includes Greek and international contemporary art. The Museum was founded in 2000 and has so far focused on 21st century art. Greek art from the wider post-war period, through which it has collected Greek art of the post-war period. The core of the collection consists primarily of works of conceptual art as well as works of socio-political orientation. Today the the collection has 1,400 works.

For the first time the Museum is operating in a multifaceted and complex collection, exhibition, publishing and educational activities to which should be added the major international and domestic communication and promotion campaign that has just begun, and the necessary architectural interventions in the spaces and the collection, in order to improve the museum and exhibition experience (e.g. design of the entrance, the shop, signage). The EMST now not only covers its operating costs and and its inelastic obligations but also presents and supports a programme of international standards.
