After 16 cherished years, the iconic Yiasemi café-bistro on the stairs of Mnisikleous Street in Plaka has closed its doors. Known for its homemade pies, traditional drinks, and the warm atmosphere that made it a favorite among locals and tourists alike, Yiasemi was more than just a café—it was a cultural landmark. The closure was due to a change in property ownership, with the new owners choosing to repurpose the space, despite efforts by owner Mariza Kouzeli to retain the lease.

However, this is not the end of Yiasemi’s story. The owner announced that the spirit of Yiasemi will live on at a new location: Yiasemi Cottage, a delicatessen situated at 7 Irakleidon Street in Thissio. Here, the essence of the original café continues through carefully selected products and flavors that evoke the same warmth and nostalgia. So, “The journey continues,” inviting patrons to embrace this new chapter with the same love and support that made Yiasemi a beloved part of Athens’ cultural tapestry.

Though Yiasemi may no longer grace its familiar corner, the stairs of Mnisikleous Street in Plaka will remain as iconic as ever. These sun-drenched steps, lined with blooming pots and timeless charm, have long been a symbol of Athenian daily life and character. They’ll continue to draw wanderers, storytellers, and dreamers—carrying with them echoes of laughter, music, and the sweet scent of Yiasemi that once filled the air and only locals could tell you more about them.
